Before you decide to join a fraternity you will surely
have a few questions. Three of the commonly asked questions
are listed below along with our answers:
I am my own man, an individual - I
don't need a fraternity to "fit in". Why would
anyone join a frat?
Two reasons: First, the one thing that makes the fraternity
experience so rich is the collection of ideas, opinions,
methods and aspirations that each member brings to the group.
When you become a Beta, you do not lose a part of yourself;
in fact, with the help of other members you will find that
you are able to access MORE of yourself. Secondly, Beta
Theta Pi has a personality as a whole. This collective personality
is defined by the makeup of the current membership, but
strengthened by the core values that Beta Theta Pi has upheld
since 1839.
Don't you guys just drink and
party and stuff?
Sometimes we suffer from this popular perception; that fraternities
are all about the party. Beta Theta Pi does host great parties
and interesting events but we all know why we are here,
and that is to succeed in life. This means being dedicated
to our studies, aiding each other, and aiming to leave a
positive mark on the world by leading through example. Some
of our members do not drink at all for religious or other
reasons. They do not feel any less a part of the goings-on.
"The party" is not an essential part of our organization.
I work my butt off to make enough
money to go to University. Wouldn't I be wasting my money
if I joined you guys?
A couple things about this. For most of us there is no more
serious time in our lives than university. More than just
making our families proud, it's our first real opportunity
to accomplish something independently.
Ironically, Beta gives the chance to be independent alongside
other independents. For anyone, fraternity brother or not,
there are a million ways to waste one's money. More than
just a party, Beta offers a structure for studying, sharing
and supporting one another. Not only do we promote, but
expect our members to concentrate on school. Our board includes
a Scholastic Chairman whose responsibility it is to ensure
that proper study sessions are being held and that everyone
meets our minimum 2.7 GPA requirement!
Second, there are opportunities for those of us who feel
the pressure of finances more than others. Members who live
in the Beta House take advantage of shared resources, and
membership dues that are rolled in to our very affordable
rent.
